The Pros and Cons of a Mobile Veterinary Practice

The Pros and Cons of a Mobile Veterinary PracticeThe Pros and Cons of a Mobile Veterinary PracticeMobile veterinary clinics have become increasingly popular in recent years, and many veterinarians are starting mobile practices that utilize specially outfitted vans to visit their clients. This type of service differs from traditional private practice, where pet owners bring their animals to a brick and mortar location for appointments with a veterinarian. Should you consider using the mobile veterinary clinic model for your practice? Lets take a look at the specific advantages and disadvantages of operating a mobile veterinary practice. The Pros of Operating a Mobile Vet Practice Low start-up and operation costsA mobile clinic is much less expensive to open than a brick and mortar location. An article in Veterinary Practice nachrichtensendung from 2009 cited a $250,000 startup cost for mobile clinics, much cheaper than the estimated $1,000,000 startup cost for traditional location s. Mobile practitioners also save on traditional overhead costs like rent and property taxes. The mobile vet vehicle outfitter La Boit found that the average all inclusive cost to run a mobile clinic is just $300 per day. Convenience for pet ownersMobile clinics are an attractive service option for clients, particularly those with limited mobility due to physical issues, a lack of transportation to get to a traditional clinic location, or a pet that is difficult to transport due to size or physical infirmity. It is also convenient for those with multiple pets, as they can all be examined at the same time.Collection of additional house call feesMobile practitioners can easily justify charging a convenience fee for the service. This results in additional revenue for the business. Less stress for patientsThe mobile option reduces stress dramatically for animals since they do not have to travel to the vet office, which can often be a traumatic event for pets. It also reduces stress on t heir owners.Free advertisingAdvertising placed on the side of the mobile vet vehicle will draw attention from other motorists while the clinic is en route to appointments. This form of advertising is often a primary factor in customer acquisition for mobile clinics. Not limited to a single areaMobile practitioners can go where there is demand for their services, whether that is up the street or across town. While a traditional clinic is bound to clients in a specific geographic area, a mobile clinic can travel to capitalize on demand growth in other areas. The Cons of Operating a Mobile Vet Practice Scheduling difficultiesScheduling clients can be difficult without the receptionist a stationary clinic would have on staff. In the mobile practice model, the vet and their vet tech must handle scheduling on top of their normal duties.Traffic and other delaysTraffic and weather issues can have a major impact on travel time. This can interfere with keeping appointments on schedule. Ve ts may also be delayed by chatty clients.Longer hoursMobile vets often face longer hours than traditional practitioners due to the increased travel time associated with their business model. They may also receive many more requests for service on evenings or weekends. Limitations of the vehicleMobile vets dont always have access to the full array of lab equipment that a stationary clinic would offer. They also may lack the additional assistance that would be available to deal with difficult patients in that setting.Fuel and maintenance costsMobile vets must be sure to factor in the costs of fuel and vehicle wear and tear when determining overall profits earned. These costs can be quite variable, particularly when gas prices in the current market are so volatile. Vehicle maintenance is also critical, as there can be no mobile clinic without the vehicle

Difficult relationships 5 easy ways to improve them, backed by research

Difficult relationships 5 easy ways to improve them, backed by researchDifficult relationships 5 easy ways to improve them, backed by researchSohonigweinimes your closest and most important relationships are also the most difficult. Why?Columbia business school professorAdam Galinskyand Wharton professorMaurice Schweitzerhave an answerAll your relationships are both cooperativeandcompetitive. We work together with the ones we love but we also have a bit of rivalry going on at times. Its natural, but difficult. That competitivenesscan bewhy friends and loved ones can havesuch a positive and motivating influenceon us. But it can also lead to envy and schadenfreude (taking pleasure in theirmisfortune.)Sadly, neuroscience research shows the mora similar we are to someone, the mora likely we are to feel schadenfreude.ViaFriend Foe When to Cooperate, When to Compete, and How to Succeed at BothNeuroscience research led by Hidehiko Takahashi of Japans National Institute of Radiological Scienc es finds evidence that the experience of schadenfreude is more pronounced the more similar the person experiencing the misfortune is to us.And as you may be aware, sibling rivalry can extendinto adulthood. One study looked at pairs of sisters, both married. One works, the other doesnt. What was the best predictor of whether the non-working one would get a job?If her husband made lessthan her sisters, she was likely to start going on interviews.ViaFriend Foe When to Cooperate, When to Compete, and How to Succeed at BothThe power of social comparisons even extends to adult siblings. Consider two sisters. One sister works outside the home and the other does not. What influences their decision whether or not to enter the workforce? Surprisingly, the total amount of household income does not matter much. What really matters is whether their household income is more or less than their sisters household income. David Neumark of the University of California, Irvine, found that a wife whose husband earned less than her sisters husband is far more likely to feel compelled to work. Why? Because without her participation in the job market, her household income would be less than her sisters household incomeThis type of competition is inevitable but can hurt the relationships that matter to you most.So how can we get closer to the people we loveand make sure they feel like were on their side, and not a rival to be outdone?Heres what the research had to say 1) Make sure to screw upPeople rarely show their blunders on Facebook but they certainly deutsche post dhl pictures of beautiful vacations and updates about big promotions. And that can lead to social comparisons and envy.Doing everything to make your life seem perfect may make you look good but it can also be a prescription for resentment. What makes us trust people? Warmth and competence.ViaFriend Foe When to Cooperate, When to Compete, and How to Succeed at BothResearch shows that people who inspire the most trust are those who exhibit two distinct traits warmth and competence. When all your ducks are in a row and youre living high, you look pretty competent. But the warmth part can be lacking.Whats a good way to make sure you dont inspire envy?Screw up a little. In a classic study, researchers had people evaluate three candidates. One had lousy scores, the other was nearly perfect, and the third had the same rankings as the perfect one but during the interview, he spilled coffee all over his suit.Guess who they thought most highly of? The fumbler.ViaFriend Foe When to Cooperate, When to Compete, and How to Succeed at BothStrangely enough, it turns out that they thought more highly of the high-performing person who spilled coffee than of the high performer who had been less clumsy. Why? They seemed more approachable. They werent so perfect as to make peoplejealous. And this is why karaoke is a great thing to do with co-workers. Embarrassing yourself makes you a lot more human.ViaFriend Foe When to Cooperate, When to Compete, and How to Succeed at BothWhy does singing off-key, revealing a secret, or making a mistake build trust? As most of us have learned the hard way, karaoke can be embarrassing. But it is precisely for this reason that it can help build trust. When you sing karaoke with your friends, sometimes the louder and worse you perform, the more you bond.(To learn how to get people to like you - from an FBI behavior expert, clickhere.)So if you want to show offyour new car on Facebook, dont forget to drive your friends to karaoke that weekend. But whats a way we can dodge envywithout looking like an idiot?2) The crazy question that shows you careAlison Brooks of Harvard had an assistant approach people at a train station on a rainy day. Half the time she asked people, Can I borrow your phone? I need to make an important call.Only 9 percent of those people agreed to help. But with the other people, the assistant said, Im sorry about the rain Can I borrow your phone? I need to make an important call.Yes, she apologized forthe rain. Something she did not cause and had zero control over. The result?47 percent of people helped her out. Thats a 400% increase.Similarresults were achieved in many different situations.ViaFriend Foe When to Cooperate, When to Compete, and How to Succeed at BothRegardless of how superfluous the apology was, as long as it conveyed care and concern, it boosted perceptions of warmth and increased trust.Researchshows that just asking people, Is this a good time to talk? increased compliance with requests.Little things that show you care matter - even if theyre utterly ridiculous.(To learn the lazy way to an awesome life, clickhere.)Okay, so youre not forgetting to show concern. But whats something simple youcan do to really improve a romantic relationship? Repeat after me actually, scratch that repeat afterthem.3)Imitate the one you loveWhen negotiators use perspective-taking and think about the other sides needs, they are more likely to close deals that make everyone happy.ViaFriend Foe When to Cooperate, When to Compete, and How to Succeed at BothSimply urging negotiators to think about the other sides interests prompted them to ask more critical why and what questions, which led to innovative solutions that met both parties needs.Okay, but thats business and money. Were talking about love. But heres whats interesting you know what helps you increase perspective-taking?Mimicry. Sitting like they do, folding your hands like they do, etc.ViaFriend Foe When to Cooperate, When to Compete, and How to Succeed at Both mimicry facilitates perspective-taking It helps us truly understand what another person is experiencing.Plenty of researchbacks this up. So can this improve a romantic relationship? Absolutely.Ever notice that in older happy married couples the husband and wife tend to look alike? Its true. In fact, couples tend to lookmorealike over time.ViaFriend Foe When to Cooperate, When to Compete, and How to Succeed at Both research has shown that couples do look more alike than two randomly chosen people Robert Zajonc of Stanford University took photographs of couples when they were first married and again after they had been married for 25 years. After showing the two sets of photos to objective third-party observers, he found that the couples were judged to look more similar 25 years after being married than when they were first married. And this is due to perspective-taking and mimicry. Smile the same way for decades and the lines in your face will look alike. And this actually leads to happier marriages.ViaFriend Foe When to Cooperate, When to Compete, and How to Succeed at Both married couples with a greater capacity to mimic each others facial expressions form stronger bonds. It is why couples that become physically similar over time report more joy in their marriage. So try a little bit of mimicry - just dont make it obvious.(To learn the 4 rituals new neuroscience s ays will make you happy, clickhere.)So you saw that perspective-taking can help you understand others. But how can it help others understandyou?4) Ask them for adviceWhen you use perspective-taking it can really help. But how do you get others to see your perspective?Ask them for advice.ViaFriend Foe When to Cooperate, When to Compete, and How to Succeed at BothAsking for advice is a particularly effective mechanism to get other people to take your perspective as well. As our research with Katie Liljenquist of Brigham Young Universitys Marriott School has shown, when we ask others for advice, they put themselves in our shoes and look at the world from our vantage point. But if you ask theboss or co-worker for advice, wont you seem less competent?Nope. Total opposite.ViaFriend Foe When to Cooperate, When to Compete, and How to Succeed at BothIn a project led by Alison Brooks at Harvard, we found that people fear that by asking advice, they will appear less competent. But this is a p erspective-taking failure When we ask for advice, as long as the request is not completely obvious, we appear to be more competent. After all, we have just flattered someone by seeking their advice. And whats great about seeking advice is it works with almost anyone. If theyre senior to you, it shows deference. If theyre junior to you, it pays them a big compliment.ViaFriend Foe When to Cooperate, When to Compete, and How to Succeed at BothBecause asking for advice signals respect, it is a strategy that works equally well up and down the hierarchy. It clearly works up the hierarchy because it shows deference and respect. But asking advice of someone below you on the hierarchical ladder - like when the boss asks a subordinate for their opinion - can have a powerful effect as well. The person below you in the hierarchy will be delighted to be acknowledged for their opinions and thrilled to have their expertise acknowledged.(To learn what Harvard research says is the secret to being happier and more successful, clickhere.)Okay, so what about when things go really wrong - as in, you did something you shouldnt toa friend, partner or co-worker? What do you do then to stop difficult relationships from getting evenworse?5) Apologize the right wayThere are a number of factors that improve an apology but one seems to stand way above the restPromise to change.ViaFriend Foe When to Cooperate, When to Compete, and How to Succeed at BothIn our own research, we have found that a promise to change is one of the most important components of an apology Though the simple apology helped, it was the promise to change that had the most impact on how much trust their partner placed in them in subsequent rounds of the experiment. Why are some people so reluctant to apologize? It makes themfeel less powerful and causes themto lose status.ViaFriend Foe When to Cooperate, When to Compete, and How to Succeed at Both as Tyler Okimoto of the University of Queensland has found, people who refuse to apologize feel a greater sense of power than those who apologize. But what good is that power if it destroys an important relationship? Whenever youre reluctant to apologize, a good tip is to try focusing on what results it might achieve as opposed to who is right or wrong.ViaFriend Foe When to Cooperate, When to Compete, and How to Succeed at BothAs soon as you start to feel defensive or begin to rationalize some action that might have caused harm, take a moment of reflection. Take a step back and consider what an apology might accomplish. Even when we are justified in our actions and even when we acted with the best of intentions, there are times when an apology is the right course of action.Have I made any typos yet? If so, I apologize and promise to change.(To learn how to stop being lazy and get more done, clickhere.)Weve covered a lot. Lets round it up and find out what these tips arereallyworth to you Sum upHeres what youve learned about improving difficult rela tionshipsScrew up If youve been presenting too perfect an image, its time for karaoke.Show you care Apologize for the rain if you have to. Crazy as it sounds, it works.Imitate the one you love Take their perspective and turn into one of those cute old couples.Ask for advice It flatters them and makes you look smarter, not dumber. When you apologize, promise to change It makes a hugedifference. So whats thisadvice really worth? Steven Spielbergs 2016 Harvard Commencement Speech - The Muse

Steven Spielbergs 2016 Harvard Commencement Speech - The MuseSteven Spielbergs 2016 Harvard Commencement Speech Steven Spielberg has spent over four decades creating, producing, and directing a huge number of timeless motion pictures, from science fiction hits such as Jaws, E.T. the Extra Terrestrial, and Jurassic Park, to heartwrenching films like Schindlers List and The Color Purple. But last week, he came out from behind the cameras to address Harvards class of 2016. The advice he provided applies to everyone, not just those who were decked out in a cap and gown- even if you took 37 years to graduate (like Spielberg did). First, he touches on character-defining moments. His first welches when he left college sophomore year for an amazing opportunity at Universal Studios. The most significant, though, was when he married his wife, Kate. Youre going to come across a lot of these moments over the years, Spielberg says. Because life is one strong, long string of them. And when you enc ounter them- when it comes time for you to define who you are- you need to listen to your internal voice. Its when Spielberg started to do this that certain projects began to pull me into them, and others, I turned away from. He started listening to his intuition, and his movies transitioned from the fantasy genre to being based on historical events. When it comes to figuring out who you are, he says, its so important not to allow your conscious to drown out your intuition, as it tends to do. While the former is telling you the things you should be doing, the latter is murmuring what you could be doing, instead- like pursuing what you truly enjoy, like following your dreams. Its imperative to listen to yourself instead of all the outside opinions (parents, teachers, bosses, etc.) that have occupied your mind for years. But Spielberg doesnt think you should ignore your conscious entirely. When it comes to how you treat other people, you should be all ears. Because, unfortunately, the re are still villains to vanquish in this world, and part of the future you create is not only about the career path you go down, but also about improving the world you live in. And to do that, we need to move away from the habit of creating sides, sectioning people off, isolating and persecuting individuals and entire populations for religious beliefs, sexual orientation, skin color- you anthroponym it. All hatred must be eliminated. We must band together- we must find the we, rather than the us and the them. You have the power to be a hero, even if you dont have a cape and a mask.In your defining moments, says Spielberg, do not let your morals be swayed by convenience or expediency. Sticking to your character requires a lot of courage. And to be courageous, youre going to need a lot of support. So, dont forget to phone home (no matter what home means to you).

How to Conquer 3 Common Job Search Frustrations

How to Conquer 3 Common Job Search FrustrationsHow to Conquer 3 Common Job Search FrustrationsAt first I had insisted I would only work at a company with a mission I believed in, writes author Robin Sloan in his novel Mr. Penumbras 24-Hour Bookstore. Then I thought maybe it would be fine as long as I was learning something new. After that I decided it just couldnt be evil.As Sloan describes, the job search has the tendency to change your perspective for the worst at first youre dead set on the dream job, but upon realizing the obstacles standing in your way, the concessions start flowing. However, understanding and preparing for the obstacles that result in job search frustration is an important first step in maintaining a positive attitude, despite the challenges youll likely face. Lets take a closer look.1. Finding the right jobs. While you already know to hit the standard job boards when getting the search started, there are plenty of stories about job seekers securing offers throu gh totally non-traditional strategies. Simultaneously, career experts readily suggest lots of open positions are never publicly advertised by the hiring firm. So how is the everyday job seeker to identify all the great opportunities for which theyre qualified and interested when those opportunities are so widely distributed?Imagine youre trying to sell a new record today. You cant just put up a sign in music stores and expect to reach all the listeners interested. Instead, you need to facilitate awareness through a more diversified strategy that includes media placements, touring and social engagement. The key to reaching all the hiring managers who may be interested in your candidacy is to take a similarly layered approach and leid pigeonhole the search to a single source.Scour LinkedIn, CareerBuilder and Indeed for new opportunities, but, also use services like TweetDeck to create segmented lists of social feeds sharing relevant opportunities and stay alert for appealing postings. At the same time, build trusted relationships with recruiters and network with university alumni who can provide inroads to a new job thats elend on the boards. None of these strategies are a silver bullet, but employing a diverse buffet of options widens the net of relevant and discoverable leads youll encounter.2. Submitting a suitable volume of applications. When looking for new work, youll want to cover your bases by applying to many different positions (the quantity is determined by the urgency of your search). However, even though youve now identified how to find the right jobs, submitting enough applications to yield qualified interest isnt so easy in a risk averse business world. In a job market that hosts tons of applications for roles that offer little training, more hiring firms create an initial layer of kontrolle that goes well beyond the standard rsum and cover letter. For example, word of mouth marketing firm Likeable Media asks applicants for content strategy roles to not only submit standard materials but also create an acrostic poem with their first name, describe the meme they best identify with and explain what makes them unique in 150 characters or less. While this flavor of application can help candidates show their personality, it can be frustrating to invest the time necessary to complete it without even the promise of an application receipt. To effectively cope, try to group opportunities by similarity and duration to complete so your application sessions are as efficient as possible. With this kind of pre-planning and an easily customizable rsum and cover letter, you can quickly fire off five to 10 applications for roles with basic application criteria while you wait until your next session to tackle one to two that require longer essays. Just be sure the applications that will take more time to complete are really in your wheelhouse because your time is too valuable to waste.3. Dealing with uncertainty and rejection. Uncertainty and rej ection are rampant in the job search failing to understand if youre not getting called back. Wondering whether it is because your application was reviewed and denied or because it slipped through the cracks. Confusion over how you need to improve and recruiters who disappear after (what you thought was) a good interview. To persevere through these common frustrations, first consider all the red tape stalling the hiring firms internal processes, and thus, their ability to get back to you turnover in the human resources department, an urgent need that turns out not to be so urgent or a competing candidate already deep in process. At the same time, a study from Talent Function Group LLC found applicant tracking systems auto-reject 75 percent of applicants for digital postings, while a study by TheLadders found recruiters spend about six seconds evaluating those applications you worked so hard on, quickly dismissing those candidates who dont fit the exact mold theyre looking to fill. With all these moving parts obstructing entry to the hiring firms pipeline, take solace in the fact that uncertainty and rejection are simply a new normal in the job market and shouldnt leave job seekers down on themselves. After all, its not that theyre not into you its that theyre not into almost everybody.Bottom line While not always the case, anyone looking for that great new job is likely to get knocked down a few times. But, with continuous iteration, a lot of patience and some thick skin, you can surmount these frustrations and persevere until the light at the end of the tunnel emerges.Ben Weiss is the digital marketing strategist for Infusive Solutions an NYC-based IT staffing firm in the Microsoft Partner Network that specializes in the placement of .NET, SharePoint and SQL Server developers as well as Windows Systems Engineers, DBAs and help desk support professionals in verticals such as legal, finance, fashion and media. Air Force Equal Opportunity (MEO) and Sexual Harassment

Air Force Equal Opportunity (MEO) and Sexual HarassmentAir Force Equal Opportunity (MEO) and Sexual HarassmentThe primary objective of the Military Equal Opportunity (MEO) program is to improve mission effectiveness by promoting an environment free from partal, social, or institutional barriers that prevent Air Force members from rising to the highest level of responsibility possible based on their individual merit, fitness, and capability. Air Force policy is to conduct its affairs free from unlawful discrimination and sexual harassment. The MEO program seeks to eliminate unlawful discrimination and sexual harassment against military members, family members, and retirees based on race, color, sex, national origin, or religion. The MEO office assists commanders at all levels by conducting equal opportunity programs and teaching human relations education (HRE) classes at every Air Force installation. The DoD Human Goals Proclamation forms the basis for the Air Force MEO program. It st ipulates that equal opportunity and equity in civilian employment regardless of race, color, sex, religion, or national origin will be provided as an integral part of readiness. Unlawful Discrimination This type of discrimination is based on race, color, national origin, religion, or sex that is not otherwise authorized by statute or policy. Unlawful discrimination degrades human beings, negatively impacts the mission, and violates Air Force policy. Sexual Harassment Sexual harassment is a form of sex discrimination that involves unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature when any of the following situations occur Submission to such conduct is made either explicitly or implicitly as a term or condition of a persons job, pay, or career.Submission to or rejection of such conduct by a person is used as a basis for career or employment decisions affecting that person.Such conduct has the purpose or effect of unr easonably interfering with an individuals work performance or creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive working environment. This definition emphasizes that harassment need not result in tangible psychological harm to the victim, but rather need only be so severe or pervasive that a reasonable person would perceive, and the victim does perceive, the work environment as hostile or offensive. The workplace is an expansive term for military members and may include conduct on or off duty, 24 hours a day. Any person in a supervisory or command position who uses or condones any form of sexual behavior to control, influence, or affect the career, pay, or job of a military member or civilian employee is engaging in sexual harassment. Similarly, any military member or civilian employee who makes deliberate or repeated unwelcome verbal comments, gestures, or physical contact of a sexual nature in the workplace is also engaging in sexual harassment. MEO Complaint Procedures The Milit ary Equal Opportunity staff encourages military members to try and resolve allegations of unlawful discrimination or sexual harassment at the lowest level or within their chain of command. Staff members also advise members of alternate complaint channels. Military members have several options available to assist them. They may lodge an MEO informal or formal complaint of unlawful discrimination or sexual harassment with the MEO office. Informal Complaints When an individual elects to file an informal complaint, he or she can address the concern directly with the offender, request intervention by a coworker, or use his or her chain of command to resolve the concern. Formal Complaints If the discriminatory behavior is not resolved, the complainant can opt to file a formal complaint with the Military Equal Opportunity office. When a formal complaint is filed, an MEO staff member will objectively clarify the allegation. The staff member will ask the complainant to outline specific discr iminatory behaviors exhibited by the alleged offender. Allegations must be detailed, describing the unlawful behavior, any witnesses, members organization, dates, time of occurrence, and location of the alleged behavior. The MEO staff member will inform the alleged offenders commander that a complaint has been filed. Complaint Clarification The MEO office conducts a complaint clarification for all formal complaints under the MEO purview. The clarification will determine whether unlawful discrimination or sexual harassment has occurred. If unlawful discrimination or sexual harassment is confirmed, the case is forwarded to the legal office for review and on to the offenders commander for actions deemed appropriate. The complaint clarification process takes up to 20 duty days as follows 9 duty days for the MEO office to conduct a clarification 6 duty days for legal review and 5 duty days for commander action. The MEO staff will keep the complainant and his or her commander updated re garding the position of the case until closed. Equal Opportunity and Treatment Incident (EOTI) An EOTI is an overt, damaging act directed toward an individual, group, or institution that is motivated by or has overtones of, race, color, national origin, religion, or sex. The Air Force classifies these incidents as minor, serious, or major. The basis for classification includes number of participants, cost of damages to Government or private property, hospitalization, death, and arson. Preventing Unlawful Discrimination and Sexual Harassment Establish the Proper Atmosphere in the Work Center Mission-degrading factors associated with discriminatory behaviors can be avoided if the atmosphere remains professional. Supervisors set the tone for positive rapport. Discriminatory slurs, comments, or jokes must not be permitted in the work center. Racist and sexist jokes can have a devastating and long-lasting impact on the work environment. There is a proverb that says, The one who u ses insults against another may think that they are written in sand, but to the one who receives the insults, they are carved in stone. Establish Work Center Policy Ensure people know that unlawful discrimination and sexual harassment will not be tolerated. Also, ensure military members know they are responsible for their own actions, as well as the conduct of their family members. It must be everyones policy, not because the Air Force requires it, but because everyone believes in the principles of the Air Force equal opportunity policy. Talk With Subordinates on a Regular fundament Supervisors must establish a rapport with subordinates that fosters positive human relations and be sensitive to the symptoms of increased tension in the workplace, such as requests for transfers, increased absentee problems, and requests for shift changes. The bottom line is to take steps to correct small problems before they become large ones. Above information derived from AFPAM36-2241V1
